The Angel In the Nazi Camp

I would like to recommend a fantastic book I have read lately entitled “The Angel of Life In the Auschwitz Nazi Camp (PL: „Anioł życia z Auschwitz. Historia inspirowana życiem położnej z Auschwitz”). The book was written by Nina Majewska-Brown.

It’s a historical novel about a midwife in Auschwitz. The nurse’s name was Stanisława Leszczyńska, and she literally delivered over 3,000 babies and helped many women at that time. She was opposed to Dr. Mengele and, thanks to her, the Nazi stopped killing babies after birth. Most of them survived to the end of the war.

The story is about how she entered the camp with her family and how she survived it by helping others. She was working without basic medical supplies and the children were born in really horrible conditions. She risked her life secretly tattooing the newborn babies, so their mothers could find them after the war. At the end of the book, there are some interviews with women who gave birth during the Holocaust and were Leszczyńska’s patients.

It isn’t a comfortable book to read, but it’s worth it. It gives you a unique perspective on the Holocaust. It is an unforgettable story that reinforces the importance of remembering history’s darkest chapters and celebrating the power of compassion.
